Forever in our hearts

Biography

Joan Hufnagel passed away peacefully in her home on Feb. 26, 2024, she was 100 years old. Joan was born in a little hospital in the Lamanda Park neighborhood of Pasadena. Her parents had emigrated from England with her older brother Fred. She attended Jefferson school and later attended Marshall and then PJC which is now PCC. She loved to follow her brother (Fred) around playing baseball or climbing trees. She loved to camp as a child out in Oceanside in the summer with her family. When the 19th Engineers moved into Pasadena, a soldier had caught her eye and after six months, they were married. Their son (Harold) was born while her first husband was in the war in England. When the war ended, they settled in Arcadia after the birth of their daughter (Valerie) where family life kept her busy. As with all things, challenges and changes happen and Joan found herself going back to school and working full time becoming a pre-school teacher and then a director of Calvary Baptist Church. She always loved to dance so she joined the Moose Hall in Pasadena for one singles' dance. There she met Paul Hufnagel and soon not only gained a new, wonderful, amazing husband in 1977 but four stepchildren (Mary Liz, Sally, Ann, and Paul). After retirement, Joan spent time working in her amazing yard, she was busy with the Woman's Garden Club of Sierra Madre, her church at Paz Naz, and her family. She has been blessed with a wonderful life. She is preceded in death by her husband, Paul Hufnagel, her children Harold Fetchner and Valerie Taylor, as well as two stepdaughters Sally Kraus and Ann Hufnagel. She is survived by her stepdaughter Mary Liz Maletis of Menlo Park, Ca, stepson and spouse, Paul & Jane Hufnagel of Pasadena, Ca, and daughter in law Margaret Fetchner of La Habra, Ca. She is also survived by a nephew and spouse, John & Roberta Mortimer as well as a niece Stephanie Meyer. She is survived also by her wonderful 8 grandchildren to include Jennifer Sabdo, James Taylor, Peter Maletis, Elizabeth Stuart, Laura Maletis, John Maletis, Kelly Whitman, and Joe Mulleary. She has 19 great-grandchildren, and she has one great-great granddaughter. A memorial service will be held at Mountain View Chapel on April 6th, 2024, at 10 am with Dr. Walker Railey officiating. Family will receive guests at her home after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the organizations below.

John Fredric Mortimer published a tribute .

The great sorrow in Aunt Joan's life was the untimely deaths of both her Children. Both Valerie and Harold Jr. died of rare brain diseases (different ones). She had a character that demanded serving others, a fine mind to her hundredth year, and great maternal strength.
