Gary Freeman was a man of integrity, humanity, and faith. He dedicated his life to God, his family, and judo. Gary cared deeply for his family, friends, and students. He was an extraordinary person and exemplary leader.Gary was a loyal Account Manager with Heineken USA for decades with a territory that included Santa Barbara, CA and Las Vegas, NV. He was so very proud of his service in the U.S. Army. He loved to share his Army stories and tell us about his time at Fort Lewis, WA.Gary began practicing Judo in 1949 at Sawtelle Dojo under Sensei Kikuchi. After serving in the US Army, he joined Hollywood Dojo in 1960, making him their longest living member. Gary was for many years the assistant to Frank Emi, before becoming Head Instructor and Chairman of the Board at Hollywood Dojo. Sensei Gary will be missed by all the judoka who knew him.Gary was the beloved husband of Ann Freeman and adored father to John and William Freeman, their wives Caroline and Amy, and "Poppa" to his darling granddaughter, Madison. His treasured dog, Mo, misses him as well.
