Biography

Eugene “Gene” Milton Plunkett, 88, passed away quietly December 21, 2023, surrounded by his family at his residence in Tucson, Arizona.

Eugene, or Gene to most, was born on May 24th, 1935 in Augusta, Georgia. He was the only child of Harold Russel and Dorothy Mae Plunkett, both of whom have preceded him in death. He graduated high school from the Academy of Richmond County (ARC) in 1954, where he was a member of the ARC Rifle Team.

Gene was passionate about photography, radio broadcasting (he spent 46 years in radio and television production), and lawn bowling where he was active in Arcadia, CA until his stroke in 2019. He loved to travel and did much with his late wife Gale, or “Duffy” to her friends and school chums. She met Gene at a parent teacher conference and they were married for over 35 years. She also preceded him in death in August of 2015.

Eugene is survived by his eldest daughter Diana of Upland, California. And Ron and Cathey of Marana and Tucson, Arizona, respectively. He has four grandchildren, Eric, Jamie, Rhiannon and Caiden. And six great-grandchildren, Penelope, Paxton, Preston, Jackson, Sylvie and Bowie.

He was only with Casas Adobes Assisted Living in Tucson for a few years, but he made an impact on the nurses and Catalina Hospice nurses that cared for him. His humor and jocularity made him great and easy going patient, husband and dad. We will miss him greatly.

He will be interned with Duffy at Mountain View Mortuary in Altadena, California.
